The Stratton Faxon New Haven Road Race celebrates its 35th anniversary this Labor Day on Sept. 3. Race directors expect a record crowd of 7,000 participants competing in the 20K, 5K and Kids Fun Run.

Last year’s race was the event’s largest crowd of over 6,500 runners. The event will again host the USA Men’s & Women’s 20K National Championship and feature a number of past U.S. Olympians.

This will be the 21st consecutive year a National Championship race has been held in New Haven.

New this year, the race features a more scenic and flatter 20K course through the picturesque Westville neighborhood. This is the first major change to the 20K course in race history.

Runners pass the New Haven Green lined with nearly 10,000 spectators half way through the race.

All participants in the 20K, 5K and Kids Fun Run receive commemorative 35th anniversary medals upon finishing.

Participants are strongly encouraged to register soon as there will be no race day registration. Participants can register online at newhavenroadrace.org or download an entry form and mail it in.

John Courtmanche, road race president, said, “We’ve been fortunate to continually grow and improve throughout our history and are very excited to present our new 20K course.

“The race’s continued success reflects the significant and meaningful support that we receive from the City of New Haven administration and their employees, as well as from the running community itself.”

The race was selected as Runner’s World Race of the Month for September 2009.
